Daughter of Ex-Iranian Prez Sentenced to 5 Yr Imprisonment

Faezeh Hashemi, the activist daughter of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was sentenced to five years in prison by an Iranian court.

Details of the charges against her are not known. Last year Tehran’s public prosecutor indicted Hashemi on charges of “propaganda against the system”, reported the semi-official ISNA news agency of Iran.

Iranian government media stated that she had been arrested for “inciting riots” in Tehran during anti-hijab protests triggered by the death of a young Kurdish woman in police custody.

In 2012, Faezeh Hashemi was sentenced to jail and banned from political activities for “anti-state propaganda”. Her father, former president Rafsanjani died in 2017.

“Faezeh Hashemi was sentenced to five years in prison but the sentence is not final,” defence lawyer Neda Shams wrote on her Twitter account.
