Expect Most Rs 2000 Notes to Return Back: RBI Governor Shaktikant Das

New Delhi: “We expect most of Rs 2,000 banknotes to come back to the exchequer by September 30,” said RBI governor Shaktikant Das on Monday. He said the decision of the RBI to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes, its highest-value currency note, from circulation is a part of the currency management operations of the central bank.

He said the Indian currency management system was very robust.

The RBI Governor said, “Rs 2,000 banknotes were introduced primarily to replenish the notes withdrawn following demonetization.”

Shaktikant Das said RBI would be sensitive to difficulties faced by people regarding the exchange of Rs 2,000 banknotes.

“Reluctance among merchants to accept Rs 2,000 banknotes were there previously as well, may have increased after the withdrawal,” he said.
