Females Shouldn’t Study Science Subjects; Taliban’s New Theory

Science education and what girls wore to universities had worried the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan. So, they preferred to bar females from getting university education. Afghan universities have closed their doors to women because female students were not following instructions including a proper dress code, declared the Taliban’s minister for higher education.

“They were dressing like they were going to a wedding. Those girls who were coming to universities from home were also not following instructions on hijab,” said Neda Mohammad Nadeem, the Taliban minister for higher education.

Nadeem also said some science subjects were not suitable for women. “Engineering, agriculture, and some other courses do not match the dignity and honour of female students and also Afghan culture,” he added.

While several countries including Muslim nations have protested against this ban on higher education of women in Afghanistan, the Taliban government has no regrets for its order.

The Taliban minister for higher education said that women students were ignoring Islamic diktats including what to wear or being accompanied by a male relative when travelling. According to him even after 14 months, the instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education of the Islamic Emirate regarding the education of women were not implemented.

Taliban authorities also decided to shut down those madrassas that were teaching only women students but were housed inside mosques.

Some women in Afghanistan have started small protests against the ban on their education.
