Fifth Quake Strikes Turkey; Over 5000 Dead; 4 Detained in Turkey for Provocative Social Media posts

Two fresh earthquakes of 5.6 and 5.7 magnitudes hit Turkey on Tuesday. On Monday three deadly quakes of magnitude 7.8, 7.6, and 6.0 caused massive number of deaths and injuries in Turkey and Syria. More than 5000 persons are reported to have died in this series of earthquakes experienced in this region.

Repeat quakes are causing panic among rescue workers and survivors.

Meanwhile, mischievous social media posts are also adding to the problems of the administration and police involved in rescue operations in earthquake-hit areas. Turkish police detained four persons involved in uploading mischievous “provocative” social media posts after the earthquake hit the country.

These four were detained after officers found accounts that shared “provocative posts aiming to create fear and panic”, Turkish police said. The content of their posts was not revealed. But a wider investigation into social media accounts was ongoing. Now Turkish social media is filled with posts by people who complain about a lack of search and rescue efforts in their area.
