Hottest February Since 1877; India Set for a Harsh Summer This Year

In February 2023, the maximum temperature recorded in India rose to 29.54 degrees Celsius. This was the highest maximum temperature recorded since 1877. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) report, this was the hottest February experienced by Indians in the last 146 years.

Usually, the maximum temperature in February remains around 27 degrees Celsius. But this year it has started to show an upward trend in February. The IMD has already cautioned people regarding hotter summer months as the temperature in most parts of the country could be much higher than normal.

In February this year, India also recorded the highest minimum temperature in the last 122 years. The mercury reached 16.31 degrees Celsius, which was 0.81 degree Celsius above normal. For this reason, it was the fifth warmest February after 1901.

Earlier in February of 2016, the maximum temperature was 29.48 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature was 16.82 degree Celsius.
