ICC & State Pollution Control Board Oraganises National Conference on Solid Waste Management

Bhubaneswar: A National Conference on Circular Economy has been organized jointly by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the State Pollution Control Board. The conference focused on “Focusing on Waste Management Technologies, Sustainability and Achieving Net Zero”.

The program was inaugurated under the chairmanship of ICC Chairman J B Pany with Steel and Mines Minister Prafulla Kumar Mallick as the chief guest, State Pollution Control Board Member Secretary and Dr K Murugesan,  IFS  Kalyan Charan Mohanty, Executive Director of IPICOL joined as a guest of honour., Dr N R Sahoo Chairperson ICC ESH committee along with the Regional head of ICC odisha council J P Pal also joined the inaugural session.

By inaugurating the event minister said Our primary responsibility is to protect the environment.  Steps have been taken for an effective mining framework for environmental protection  The policy form of the new Mining Policy 2019 promotes strict rules for environmentally sustainable mining practices, but its effective implementation remains a challenge.

Replenishment of mine sites and mine environment.  Inevitability for people living near mines  Native fill soils and grasses, clearing excess waste, appropriate waste disposal  Removal and replanting of trees can provide a long-term revitalization, helping to repair ecosystems and sustain the environment for years to come.

Dr k Murugesan stated that the Circular Economy principle is the key to achieving sustainable development. Odisha being a mining and mineral-based economy has ample scope to harness the CE principle. The State has now taken initiative to open up the waste management sector. In the industrial policy, several incentives have also been suggested for waste recovery and reuse.

On this occasion Pankaj Satija, chairperson ICC Mining committee told We all live in the bosom of mother earth and that it is our responsibility as individuals and as a society to take care of the environment. It is our duty to protect what we can. Citing the example of the Netherlands, which has targeted zero waste by 2050, Satija added, “I see that Odisha can do with so much intelligence and with so much ethnic diversity and tribal population. I am sure that we will be able to achieve what the Odisha government is aiming for.”

By sharing his views Icc chairman J B Pany told that the circular economy has the potential to capitalize upon emerging digital technologies like Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Block Chain and the Internet of Things (IoT). Thousands of sensors and drones to monitor waste collection and landfills, autonomous waste collection vehicles, and 3D printers are trying to reuse different types of plastics and waste.

In the second session, the Guest speakers were Klinga Keshari Rath, Founder and Managing Director of Evos Buildcon, Srinibash Sahu, Managing Partner of Raikela Iron & Ore Mines, Commodore G. Prakash, Retired Vice President of Nava Bharat Ventures Limited, Pankaj Satija, Chairman of Mineral Metals Committee, COO of Apollo Hospitals as keynote speakers.

Dr Alok Srivastava,  coo& Director of Medical services at Apollo Hospitals, Arpit Kumar Dixit, Assistant Vice President of Shree Cement, Ramesh Despande, COO of Runaya Group, Ajay Gupta of Grasim Industries Ganjam joined and discussed various types of waste management problems and efficient technology solutions for waste management.

Various revolutionary initiatives and success stories of the industry were also presented.  In the third session, Scientists Dr S.Shatpathy, and Prof. Dr Sanjat Kumar Sahu joined and highlighted waste management. Later, another session was held on waste management of various industries. In the stage of economic development, mankind is facing many environmental challenges. Land degradation, depletion of resource potential, and increase in waste are now global calls for action. Further attention needs to be paid to the solid waste management agenda. The waste must be a part of Cycles of nature, they should be extracted and used,” opined the guests. The session was chaired by Dr N. R. Sahu, Chairperson of, the ICC ESH Committee.
