India Will Overtake China in 2023 To Become Most Populous Nation

While the world population reached 800 crore on Tuesday, India is expected to surpass China as the world’s most populous nation by next year.

According to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the world added 100 crore people in the last 12 years. As per UNFPA, in the addition of the next 100 crore population, China’s contribution will be negative. India is to become the world’s most populous nation by 2023, UNFPA said.

The World Population Prospects 2022, which was released in July this year reported that India’s population was 141.2 crore in 2022. In comparison, China’s population was 142.6 crore.

By 2050 India is projected to have a population of 166.8 crore. At that time China’s population will be 131.7 crore, as China would be showing negative population growth rate.

In 2022, India and China with more than 140 crore population each, accounted for the most populous regions of the world.

Half of the projected population growth till 2050 is expected to be concentrated in countries like Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines and  Tanzania.
