India’s 1st Urban Public Transport Ropeway to Come Up in Varanasi

Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation for India’s first public transport ropeway in Varanasi on March 24.

This proposed ropeway will run from Cantonment Railway Station (Varanasi Junction) to Godaulia Square. The project will cost around Rs 644.49 crore.

After Bolivia’s La Paz and Mexico, India will be the third country in the world and Varanasi will be the first city in the country where a ropeway will be used for public transport. This project will be jointly constructed by Swiss company Bertholet and National Highway Logistics Private Limited (NHLPL).

This public transport ropeway will have five stations from Varanasi Cantt station to Godaulia intersection. Stations will be at Cantt Railway Station, Kashi Vidyapeeth, Rath Yatra, Church and Godaulia Crossing. The ropeway will be 3.8 kilometers long and it will take 16 minutes to cover the distance by ropeway.

In this urban transportation ropeway around 150 trolley cars will run at a height of about 50 meters. Each trolley will carry 10 passengers. Around 3000 people will be able to travel in one direction in an hour. As per the plans, the ropeway will be ready within 2 years. Glimpses of Kashi’s art, religion and culture will be seen at all the stations built for the ropeway.
