Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023: A Salute to India’s Courageous Soldiers on 24th Anniversary

Kargil Vijay Diwas is an annual celebration in India, commemorating the our victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War of 1999. This significant day pays tribute to the brave Indian soldiers who displayed immense courage and made sacrifices during the intense conflict. The successful military operation against Pakistan was named Operation Vijay.

The Kargil War was triggered when Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and entered the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir (now part of the Union Territory of Ladakh). Lasting from May to July 1999, the war culminated on July 26 when the Indian Army recaptured all the Indian posts in Kargil that had been occupied by Pakistan’s army.

Captain Vikram Batra, Lt Manoj Kumar Pandey, Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, Major Vivek Gupta, and 523 other brave soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice for the country during the Kargil War.

To honour these heroes, various events and parades are organized annually, with the main ceremony taking place at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass. On the 24th anniversary of the Kargil War in 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to the fallen soldiers, acknowledging their enduring inspiration for the nation.

On this significant day, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan were among the dignitaries who paid their tributes at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass.

Kargil Vijay Diwas holds immense importance as it serves as a reminder of the valor and sacrifices made by the Indian soldiers during the Kargil War. It stands as a day of remembrance and gratitude for their selfless dedication in safeguarding the nation.
