New Delhi: The Government of India conducted a successful test of its emergency alert system on August 17, 2023. The test message was sent to all Android phones in the country and generated a loud beep accompanied by an “emergency alert: severe” notification.
The test was conducted by the Department of Telecommunications and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to evaluate the efficiency of the Pan-India Emergency Alert System. The system is designed to send timely alerts to citizens during emergencies such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and flash floods.
The test message informed users that it was part of a sample testing exercise conducted by the government and that no action was required on their part. The message also included information about how to sign up for emergency alerts.
This successful test is a major step forward in India’s efforts to improve disaster preparedness. The government is committed to using mobile technology to reach citizens with life-saving information during emergencies.
