Manipur Violence: Security Forces Eliminate 40 Suspected Terrorists

Imphal: A violent crackdown by state police and security forces has resulted in the deaths of at least 40 armed terrorists suspected to be from Kuki militant groups in Manipur. Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced this development and stated that operations against the militants are still ongoing, with the possibility of increasing casualty figures.

However, fresh violence erupted, leading to the deaths of four civilians and one para-military personnel. The Chief Minister clarified that the violence is not between two communities, but rather a conflict between armed terrorists seeking to destabilize Manipur.

The crackdown specifically targets Kuki militant groups that had previously signed a suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with the central government and the state government in 2008. Under this agreement, the cadres of these groups were supposed to be confined to designated camps, with their weapons securely locked away.

However, there have been allegations by the state government that militants belonging to the SoO groups may be involved in the ongoing violence. On the other hand, Kuki groups have accused two radical groups from the Meitei community of instigating the attacks.

The recent ethnic clashes in Manipur began on May 3 when the Kuki community opposed the granting of scheduled tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community, which comprises the majority of the population.

These clashes have resulted in significant casualties, including 74 deaths, nearly 300 injuries, and the displacement of over 30,000 people. Curfews have been imposed throughout the state, with limited relaxations, and internet services have been shut down for the past 25 days.

The crackdown on armed militants coincides with the upcoming visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Manipur on May 29. During his visit, Shah aims to hold discussions with various stakeholders to find a resolution to the ongoing ethnic violence. Chief Minister Singh has urged civilians from all communities to refrain from taking to the streets to ensure the smooth movement of commandos and security forces. He also emphasized that the government will not tolerate the disintegration of Manipur and will take action against those involved in violence.

Fresh clashes between armed militants and security forces occurred on Sunday in several districts surrounding the Imphal Valley. These militants are reportedly heavily armed with automatic assault rifles and machine guns. The clashes resulted in the vandalization of the house of a BJP MLA and the torching of two vehicles.

Curfew hours have been adjusted in response to the violence, and a significant deployment of Indian Army and Assam Rifles personnel has been made to maintain law and order in the state.
