Meeting on Uniform Civil Code by Parliamentary Standing Committee

New Delhi: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice held a meeting on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Monday.

This Parliamentary Committee is headed by Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi. During the meeting the Parliamentary Committee wanted to get opinions from the Department of Legal Affairs, the Legislative Department, and the Law Commission of India on the issue.

On June 14, the Law Commission issued a notification inviting views from the public on the UCC.

The UCC proposes to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens which will be equal for all citizens irrespective of their religion, sex, gender and sexual orientation.

Now in India, the personal laws of various communities are governed by their religious scriptures.

Several Opposition parties have criticized the Central Government’s attempt to bring the UCC.
