NASA Unveils its New Spacesuit for Artemis III Moon Mission

NASA on Wednesday unveiled the prototype of the spacesuit to be to be worn by astronauts on their journey to the Moon in 2025. This spacesuit prototype was displayed at Space Center Houston’s Moon 2 Mars Festival. NASA will receive a full set of training spacesuits later this year.

The new suit named Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) has been designed and built by Axiom Space, a space services company for NASA.

In 2022, NASA awarded Axiom a $228.5 million order under a $1.26 billion contract to build next-generation spacesuits for Artemis lunar missions.

Axiom’s next generation spacesuits use NASA’s research and technology. They will enable the first woman to walk on the Moon. The new spacesuits provide more mobility and flexibility. They can withstand harsh environment better. They also have specialised tools to accomplish exploration needs.

Although the prototype was shown in black colour, the spacesuit worn on the Moon must be white to reflect heat and protect astronauts from extreme high temperatures.

Artemis III is scheduled to land near the lunar south pole in 2025. Axiom Space’s Artemis III spacesuit will be ready to meet the complex challenges of the lunar south pole. Prior to the mission, Axiom Space will test the suit in a space-like environment.
