Newly Married Bride Fights Dowry Demand to Return Home a Day After Marriage in Kandhamal

Phulbani: Devaki Digal, a young bride from Baliguda preferred to return back to her parents rather than bowing down to the dowry demanded by her in-laws. It is alleged that her in-laws were pressing her to get a bike as a dowry.

Devaki had got married to Arjun Digal on June 9 and as per the norms, she went to her in-laws’ home. But there she allegedly faced the demand for a bike from her husband and in-laws. According to her, they had not made such a demand before the marriage even though their engagement was held two years back.

Without bowing down to the dowry demand, Devaki preferred to show up the courage and walked out of the marriage. She removed the bangles and mangalsutra that are marks of marriage and returned back to her parent’s home. According to her, if her husband and in-laws wanted a bike rather than her, she was not ready to accept them.

She did not want to put financial pressure on her poor parents by accepting the demand for a bike by her in-laws.

But the groom’s family denied having demanded a bike as dowry.
