Posing as IPL Player Youth Dupes 2 Women of Rs 13 Lakh in Delhi

New Delhi: A 24-year-old man was arrested by Delhi police for allegedly duping two women, including a cricketer of Rs 13 lakh.

The arrested accused was identified as Gagan Sharma from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr. According to police sources, Gagan posed as an IPL player to trap the woman and the female cricketer. He promised to arrange sponsorship from a prominent sports company for the Ranji Trophy tournament. The arrested man also promised one of the women a government job.

The victims, Ananya Jain and Swati Tyagi, in their complaint, stated that they met Sharma, while he was conducting cricket coaching at a park in Preet Vihar of Delhi. Sharma claimed to playing for an Indian Premier League (IPL) team. He also claimed that his relatives had contacts with higher officials in various departments. He claimed that his sister was a judge at a high court, his father a station house officer in the Delhi Police and his uncle was the director of a public bank.

Sharma then offered Tyagi a chance to play in the Ranji Trophy tournament with the help of sponsorship from a sports company. He gave a forged cheque and a fake letter of sponsorship from the company.

Similarly, Sharma also offered to arrange a job for Jain in a public sector bank. He gave her a forged appointment letter. The cheat took Rs 13 lakh from the two women in return.

Following complaint by the women, raids were conducted and the accused was arrested from Delhi’s Nirman Vihar area.
