Spurious Liquor Claims 6 Lives in Dry Bihar’s Chhapra  

Patna: At least six people are suspected to have died after consuming spurious liquor in Bihar’s Chhapra district. As informed by officials, five of them succumbed to the toxic liquor in their villages while another one died at the Chhapra district hospital. Several others affected by spurious liquor are reported to be undergoing treatment in different private hospitals.

It is suspected that the death-causing spurious liquor was laced with lethal methyl alcohol, which can cause blindness. Some critically ill victims are reported to have lost their sight. According to local Superintendent of Police (SP) S Kumar, three bodies of persons suspected to have died due to the consumption of toxic liquor have been sent for postmortem.

Liquor Deaths despite Complete Prohibition:

A complete ban on sell and consumption of liquor continues in Bihar since April 2016. But this is the third liquor tragedy in Bihar in the last six months.

In March, illicit liquor claimed 32 lives in Bihar. In August similar liquor tragedy had taken the lives of 11 persons in this so-called dry state.
