Sunak to Make Maths Compulsory for All Students in Britain

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is planning to make all students in England study maths up to the age of 18. This is an effort to enhance the standard of education in the UK.

Sunak is expected to make this announcement in his first speech of the year, reported The Independent. In this speech, he will highlight the fact that in the future employment will require more analytical skills than before.

In Britain only 50 per cent of the students aged 16 to 19 years study maths. Sunak’s plan for compulsory maths involves students taking some form of the subject alongside others.

The policy would only apply to students in England. It is not expected to be implemented until after the next election. Sunak’s focus on numeracy comes at a time when government figures show that about 8 million adults in England have the numeracy skills of primary school children.
