Surprise Infiltration, Hamas Takes 35 Israeli Civilians as Hostage

Much of Israel was awakened on Saturday morning to scarcely conceivable scenes and sounds of rocket attacks. Gunfire was heard in parts of southern Israel, with the accompanying unthinkable news that dozens of Hamas terrorists had infiltrated from Gaza.

The Palestinian militants entered Israel from Gaza and held at least 35 civilians hostage as rocket sirens were heard across the country. One woman was killed in the Hamas rocket attack. According to Israeli police sources, a shootout with militants was underway at a police station. Military reservists protesting judicial overhaul announced that they would return to duty to thwart Hamas infiltration and attack.

Precisely 50 years after the Yom Kippur War, Israel came under this surprise attack — not by Arab armies, but by the Hamas terrorist group.
