Telegram Service’s Historic Era Comes to an End in Germany

Like many other countries, the historic telegram services will discontinue in Germany marking the end of an era of technology. India Post discontinued its telegram service in 2013.

Germany’s postal service, Deutsche Post, has declared that it will no more provide the facility for telegrams. Telegrams were short messages sent through the medium of the telegraph. In the times of the internet and social media, traditional telegrams have become obsolete.

According to Deutsche Post January 1, 2023, was the final day of telegram services in Germany. On this final day, 3,228 telegrams were dispatched. It was in sharp contrast to the monthly average of 200-300 telegrams it had handled in recent years.

In India, telegram service continued for 163 years till July 15, 2013.

Telegrams were sent and received using the technology developed in the 1830s and 1840s by Samuel Morse and other inventors. At that time the telegraph revolutionized long-distance communication. It worked by transmitting electrical signals over a wire laid between stations. The code using which messages were sent was called ‘Morse Code’.
