WB Minister Utters Derogartory Remark On Looks of President Droupadi Murmu

Kolkata: TMC’s senior leader and West Bengal minister Akhil Giri did not shy to pass derogatory remarks at President Droupadai Murmu on Friday. He did not think twice before making a sarcastic remark about the looks of the first citizen of the country.

Giri was targeting BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in a public rally in Nandigram. In his attempt to do so, Giri dragged President Murmu into his political speech.

“He ( Suvendu Adhikari) says I am not good-looking. How beautiful you are! We don’t judge anyone by their appearance, we respect the office of the President (of India). But how does our President look?” the TMC leader said.

Giri during his speech tried to literally hit Suvendu Adhikari below the belt by saying, “Then your father is a negti minister (underwear minister)”.

The BJP has taken Giri’s statement seriously. BJP leaders have condemned the statement of the Bengal minister terming Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the TMC as “anti-tribal”. The West Bengal BJP unit has posted Giri’s statement on social media.

President Droupadi Murmu hails from Odisha’s tribal community. She is the first tribal President of India and the country’s second female President.

This is not the first time that an opposition leader has made an objectionable remark against the President. In July this year, senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury called President Murmu ‘Rashtrapatni’. In October, another congress leader Udit Raj also made controversial remarks about President Murmu. Both Congress leaders later apologised for their statements.
