WB Police Files 2 Cases Against Hanuman Jayanti Organisers

Kolkata: West Bengal’s Hooghly district police filed two cases against the organisers of the Hanuman Jayanti procession that was taken out in Bansberia on Thursday. West Bengal police authorities alleged that the organisers of this procession did not take permission to hold the rally. They also brandished swords while taking out the Hanuman Jayanti Sobha Yatra.

On Thursday security forces in West Bengal were on high alert for the Hanuman Jayanti. A few days back communal violence occurred at several locations in the state over Ram Navami celebrations. Because of it Section 144 was imposed in many areas in Hooghly and the internet service was also suspended.

To check violent incidents on Hanuman Jayanti, the Calcutta High Court had ordered central forces be deployed in the state. Three companies of central forces were deployed in parts of Kolkata, Hooghly and Barrackpore on Thursday to assist in maintaining of law and order.

The Calcutta High Court had also remarked that the police are at liberty to deny permission for processions. The Hooghly Police had denied permission for the Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra. But the organisers defied the restriction to hold the rally with members brandishing swords during the procession. No arrests have been made so far.
