TMC Leader Shahjahan Sheikh Should be Handed Over to CBI Today, Directs Calcutta HC

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered that the custody of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, who was arrested by the West Bengal police on February 29 in connection with the attack on ED officials, should be handed over to the CBI.

The Calcutta High Court also directed the West Bengal government to transfer the investigation of the attack on the ED officials at Sandeshkhali on January 5 to the CBI.

A division bench of Calcutta High Court presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam ordered the directions be complied with by 4.30 pm on Tuesday.

Moving separate appeals before the High Court, the ED wanted the probe to be transferred to the CBI; the state prayed that the investigation be given to the West Bengal police only.

The TMC leader was arrested by the state police a day after the Calcutta High Court ordered that Sheikh can be arrested by the CBI, the ED or the West Bengal Police. He is also the prime accused in alleged sexual atrocities on women and land grabbing at Sandeshkhali.
