Women’s Reservation Bill Approved By President Draupadi Murmu

New Delhi: The government of India issued a gazette notification for the Women’s Reservation Bill after it received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu. With the approval of the president, 33 percent of women’s reservation in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, is now a law.

The Women’s Reservation Bill, officially known as the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,’ was successfully passed in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. This landmark legislation grants a 33 percent quota for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, signifying a significant step toward gender equality in the country.
The bill received resounding support in the Lok Sabha, passing with an overwhelming majority, and later gained unanimous approval in the Rajya Sabha, with over 215 MPs voting in favour, and no votes against or abstentions. This resounding consensus paves the way for the Women’s Reservation Bill to become law.
Notably, this bill marks the first piece of legislation presented in the new Parliament, underlining its historical significance. During the bill’s introduction, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal highlighted the various initiatives undertaken by the Narendra Modi government over the past nine years to empower women.
