Odisha’s First C-Band Doppler Weather Radar To Be Installed In Sambalpur

Bhubaneswar: Sambalpur district is set to be home to Odisha’s first C-Band Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) station, which will be up and running within the next three months. This addition will significantly enhance weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities in the state, which currently relies on two S-Band DWR stations located in Paradip and Gopalpur.

The upcoming C-Band DWR station boasts superior technology compared to the existing S-Band stations. C-Band radars utilize dual-polarization technology, providing highly detailed weather data for more precise and timely weather forecasts. This advanced technology can even differentiate between liquid and frozen precipitation within rain clouds, eliminating clutter from non-weather sources in the radar data.

The installation of the C-Band DWR station marks a significant step forward for Odisha’s meteorological department. The S-Band radar stations, with their operational wavelength of 8 cm to 15 cm and frequency of around 2 GHz to 4 GHz, have served the state well since the first one was commissioned in Paradip in November 2015. However, C-Band technology offers distinct advantages, promising more accurate and reliable weather predictions.
