Dolphin Census in Odisha to Begin From January 20

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Forest Department is set to initiate a comprehensive three-day dolphin census in the Bhitarkanika National Park, Gahirmatha Sanctuary and the surrounding sea area starting from January 20 to January 22.

According to Rajnagar Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sudarshan Yadav, the census will cover the river area from the Dhamara River mouth to the Devi River mouth. While the annual dolphin census in the state typically takes place in December, this year’s survey has been scheduled for the third week of January. Yadav highlighted that Odisha is home to five distinct varieties of dolphins, and the census plays a crucial role in accurately assessing their population each year.

Yadav stated, “The census enables us to obtain precise information about the population of dolphins in the state.” Teams responsible for conducting the census will be equipped with cameras, advanced GPS devices, and other essential equipment to facilitate the survey effectively.
