Vedanta Lanjigarh Trials Biodiesel as Green Fuel For Commercial Vehicles

Kalahandi: Vedanta Lanjigarh, a key producer of metallurgical grade alumina in India and part of Vedanta Aluminium, is actively integrating biodiesel into its operations to reduce carbon emissions. Recently, the company successfully conducted trials using biodiesel for its commercial vehicle fleet, a move aligned with its ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This initiative mirrors a similar successful deployment at BALCO, Vedanta’s unit in Korba, Chhattisgarh.

Biodiesel, derived from biomass, offers a renewable alternative to conventional diesel, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions when burned. Its adoption enhances operational efficiency while reducing carbon footprint and fuel consumption. Additionally, Vedanta has introduced electric forklifts at its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha, expanding its fleet of electric lithium-ion forklifts, the largest in the nation, deployed across Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Vedanta Aluminium is committed to decarbonizing its vehicle fleet, aiming to transition 100% of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) to greener options by 2030 and 75% of mining fleet by 2035. These efforts are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG7), focusing on sustainable energy access.

Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO of Alumina Business Vedanta Ltd, highlighted the company’s two-fold approach to climate action: reducing carbon footprint and offsetting emissions. By embracing greener fuels, Vedanta Lanjigarh aims to lead in sustainability practices, integrating emerging technologies to decarbonize operations and reinforce its position as an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) leader.
