Director Rajkumar Santoshi Sentenced to 2-Yr Imprisonment in Cheque Bounce Case

Mumbai: A court in Gujarat’s Jamnagar sentenced noted filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi to two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2 crore by in connection with a cheque bounce case on Saturday.

Santoshi is remembered for Bollywood blockbusters like Ghayal, Ghatak, Damini, and Andaz Apna Apna.

Senior Civil Judge VJ Gadhvi of Jamnagar pronounced this punishment of a two-year jail sentence and mandated Santoshi to pay double the borrowed amount to the complainant, Ashok Lal, an industrialist.

The Jamnagar court allowed Santoshi’s appeal for a 30-day stay on the order to allow him to challenge the verdict in higher court.

As per the complainant, he had extended a loan of Rs 1 crore to Santoshi for film production, resulting in the issuance of 10 cheques of Rs 10 lakh each. However, the cheques bounced due to insufficient funds in Santoshi’s account. Lal issued him a legal notice under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act and approached the court in 2017 after Santoshi failed to return the money.
