33 Years Ago Today: Sachin Became the Youngest Cricketer To Smash A Test Fifty

On this day, 33 years ago, Sachin Tendulkar became the youngest test cricketer in the history of the game to score a half-century. In the second test of the 1989 series against Pakistan, Sachin scored a magnificent 59 to permanently inscribe his name in cricket history.

Sachin was only 16 years and 214 days old when he frolicked through a terrifying Pakistani bowling attack to score a gritty 59 off 172 balls spanning 254 minutes. He hit four scintillating boundaries in the course. Finally, Sachin’s knock was halted by the Pak skipper Imran Khan when he trapped Sachin plumb in front of the wicket to get him out.

Sanjay Manjrekar and Sachin both scored fifties, helping India to a 288 in the opening inning. Imran Khan and Wasim Akram, shone for the host team by taking 4 and 3 wickets in the innings, respectively.

Then, as Pakistan amassed 423/9d to take a commanding first-innings lead, Ammer Malik hit a magnificent century. Manoj Prabhakar, the pick of the Indian bowlers claimed six wickets in the first inning.

The game eventually ended in a dreary draw even though Indian men were looking to be in control of the game.
