CWG 2026: Shooting Returns, Golf Set For Debut

Birmingham: After being excluded from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, shooting and para-shooting will make a comeback in Victoria in 2026. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), on Tuesday, unveiled a list of events, including debutants, for the 2026 Games.

On the other hand, Golf, BMX, and coastal rowing are the three sports that will be seen for the first time in the competition in Victoria.

One of India’s most successful sports in the history of the Commonwealth Games has been shooting. The Asian country has taken home 135 medals in total, including 63 gold ones in the sport, which is a record for an individual Indian athlete. The next sport on the list is wrestling, where Indians have won 114 medals, including 49 golds.

However, Victoria’s 2026 Commonwealth Games won’t include wrestling. Additionally, archery is still not included in the CWG’s list of sports.

Notably, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) pushed the Commonwealth Games Federation earlier this year to add wrestling and shooting to the schedule for Victoria 2026 after they were initially left off.

The CGF Annual General Meeting was held at the Grand Hotel Birmingham in the United Kingdom on July 26. The former IOA top brass met with Dame Louise Martin during that event and emphasised how the inclusion of shooting and wrestling would elevate the competition.

The Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games’ comprehensive sports programme, which includes 20 sports and 26 disciplines, including nine fully integrated Para sports, was unveiled by the Games Federation.
