Former Sri Lankan Cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne Hospitalised After Horrifying Car Accident

Colombo: Former Sri Lankan cricket captain Lahiru Thirimanne was involved in a car accident on Thursday while visiting a temple in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. He and at least one other passenger were taken to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital for observation.

According to a statement from his Legends Cricket League team, the New York Strikers, Thirimanne and those involved in the accident are in stable condition. “Thankfully, they have been admitted to the hospital for observation,” the statement said. “Fortunately, following a thorough medical assessment, we can confirm that they are all safe and sound, with no cause for concern.”

Local Sri Lankan news outlets reported that Thirimanne’s car collided head-on with a truck. The extent of the damage to the car and any injuries sustained by other parties involved in the accident are unknown.

Thirimanne is a retired Sri Lankan cricketer with a distinguished decade-long career. He played 44 Test matches, 127 ODIs, and 26 T20Is for Sri Lanka, including three T20 World Cup campaigns, notably the 2014 championship win. He announced his retirement from international cricket in July 2023.
