Bhubaneswar: India failed to qualify for the Hockey World Cup 2023 quarter-finals as the hosts lost to New Zealand in the shootout of the must-win crossover match at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
The match moved into the penalties after both India and New Zealand tied at 3 goals each in the full time.
New Zealand edged 5-4 in the penalty shootout to advance to the quarter-finals, where they will take on Belgium.
The Kiwis staged a great comeback to level the match 3-3 after they were trailing 1-3 at one stage to take the match into the penalty shootout.
Earlier in the day, Spain also beat Malaysia 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out in the same venue. It will lock horns with Australia in quarters. Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands and England have already entered the quarterfinals.
