Rahul Dravid Appointed Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals

Rahul Dravid has been officially appointed as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals for a multi-year tenure.

Dravid, who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup in June, stated that it was the “perfect time” to embrace a new challenge.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Dravid said, “I am excited to return to a franchise that I have considered ‘home’ for many years. After the World Cup triumph, it feels like the right moment to take on a new challenge and the Royals offer the ideal opportunity. With the talent and resources at our disposal, I’m eager to help elevate the team.”

Recent media reports had revealed that Dravid and RR had finalised a deal and begun discussions on player retention for the upcoming mega auction. Dravid has a strong rapport with RR captain Sanju Samson, who was under his mentorship during his tenure with India’s under-19 team.

Dravid returns to the IPL after a hiatus since 2019, during which he served as the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In 2021, he became the head coach of the Indian men’s team, leading them to their first ICC title in 11 years.

Rajasthan Royals announced that Dravid will start immediately, collaborating with the franchise’s director of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, to shape their cricketing strategy.

Despite a strong start to the 2023 season, RR failed to make the playoffs and finished fifth. They reached the playoffs in 2024 but were eliminated in Qualifier 2.

RR CEO Jake Lush McCrum commented, “We are thrilled to welcome Rahul back. His exceptional coaching skills have significantly impacted Indian cricket. Rahul’s deep connection with the franchise and his passion for the role are evident. He has already begun working with Kumar and the team as we prepare for the upcoming IPL retention and auction.”
