Sanath Jayasuriya Named Sri Lanka’s Interim Head Coach Ahead Of White-Ball Series Against India

Colombo: Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the interim head coach of the national team ahead of their upcoming white-ball series against India, commencing later this month.

The appointment comes in the aftermath of Chris Silverwood’s resignation as Sri Lanka’s head coach following their disastrous T20 World Cup campaign.

Jayasuriya, known for his aggressive batting style during his playing career, will lead Sri Lanka in both the three-match T20I series and the subsequent three ODIs against India starting from July 27.

The 55-year-old, who has previously served as a chief selector, also played a consulting role during this year’s T20 World Cup.

During his illustrious playing career, Jayasuriya featured in 110 Tests from 1991 to 2007, amassing 6973 runs with 14 centuries. In ODIs, he scored 13,430 runs in 445 matches, including 28 centuries, and was a pivotal member of Sri Lanka’s victorious 1996 ODI World Cup squad.

Jayasuriya will also oversee Sri Lanka’s upcoming Test tour to England as part of his interim coaching responsibilities.
