Similipal Tiger Reserve Utilises AI Towers to Detect & Douse Forest Fires

Bhubaneswar: In an effort to swiftly tackle forest fires, authorities at the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district have turned to cutting-edge tower-based artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

This advanced system closely monitors forest fire incidents in the Shimilipal region, enabling immediate response and containment measures. Thanks to the integration of AI technology along with the dedication of Green Fighters and ODRF personnel, forest fires have been effectively contained within the buffer area of the reserve, safeguarding the core habitat of wild animals.

Five tower-based AI systems have been strategically installed across the Similipal sanctuary, boasting high-resolution cameras capable of 360-degree surveillance within a range of 15 km. This setup significantly enhances the detection of forest fires and illegal wildlife activities such as hunting. Each AI tower comes with a price tag of approximately Rs 2.5 crore.

Furthermore, the system provides real-time data on forest fire incidents, facilitating prompt intervention measures. To address manpower shortages, the Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF) has deployed 505 fire squads across various wildlife divisions in the Mayurbhanj district. Additionally, 733 air blower machines are being utilized to aid in firefighting efforts.
