Bengal Panchayat Election: 1 Dead, 2 Critical in North Dinajpur Shooting

Chopra: A tragic incident unfolded in the North Dinajpur district of West Bengal on Thursday, where one person lost their life and two others were left in critical condition after allegedly being shot. The victims were on their way to file nominations for the upcoming panchayat polls.

The deceased and the injured were reported to be supporters of the Left Front and the Congress, and the incident occurred as they were en route to the Chopra block office for the nomination process. Following the shooting, the three individuals were rushed to the district hospital, where unfortunately, one of them succumbed to their injuries. The conditions of the remaining two victims were described as critical.

The state secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], Md Salim, stated that the attack was orchestrated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He took to Twitter to express his allegations, claiming that the TMC goons targeted Left-INC supporters and candidates during their journey to the block office for nomination filing. However, the ruling Trinamool Congress has dismissed these accusations.

In addition to this tragic incident, there were also reports of violence during the nomination filing in Bhangar, located in the South 24 Parganas district, and Saithia in the Birbhum district. The filing of nominations concluded on the last day, with polling for approximately 75,000 seats in the three-tier Panchayati Raj system scheduled to take place on July 8.
