Ex-IPS Officer Basant Rath Enlists as BJP Activist Online, Party Emphasizes Disciplined Values

Jammu: Former IPS officer Basant Rath, who recently faced premature retirement from the central government due to “repeated instances of gross misconduct and misbehaviour,” has now joined the BJP as an online activist. Rath, who had expressed interest in contesting elections on a BJP ticket against figures like Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, shared a welcome note from the BJP on social media. The BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir chief spokesperson, Sunil Sethi, emphasized that while anyone can join the BJP online, the leadership decides on responsibilities and inductees based on discipline, a trait Rath seems to have been lacking.

Rath, in a heartfelt “Thank You Note” shared on social media, expressed his gratitude to the people and revealed his new endeavour in politics. He seeks blessings as he embarks on this journey, describing it as an “uphill trek called politics.” His 23 years of service in the Indian Police Service (IPS) have been guided by the support of the people, but he believes that the path to meaningful public service is complex and challenging.

Rath’s suspension from service was a result of various instances of misconduct, and he had even lodged a complaint against the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Dilbagh Singh, citing concerns about his safety. The central government, through a notification, ordered his premature retirement in public interest.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, after considering Rath’s performance and the recommendation of the UT division, concluded that he is not fit to be retained in service in public interest, leading to his immediate retirement.

It remains to be seen how Rath’s entry into politics with the BJP will unfold, as he transitions from his law enforcement career to this new chapter.
