CBI Team Probing UGC-NET Paper Leak Case Attacked in Bihar

Patna: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team investigating the alleged UGC-NET paper leak case was attacked by villagers in Nawada, Bihar on Sunday. The villagers, mistaking the team for imposters, assaulted the officials and vandalized their vehicles.

The incident occurred in Kasiyadih village, where the team, including four officials and a woman constable, had gone to trace a suspect via a cellphone signal. The situation escalated quickly, leading the team to call for assistance from the local police. Senior local police officer Ambrish Rahul confirmed that the officials were rescued upon their arrival.

A case has been filed against approximately 200 villagers, with eight individuals specifically named. Video footage of the assault, captured on mobile phones, is being used to identify those involved. Four arrests have already been made.

The investigation continued under police protection, resulting in the seizure of two cellphones based on location tracking. The CBI officials indicated that further arrests would follow after examining the information on the seized phones.

The UGC NET exam, critical for aspiring higher education teachers, was cancelled earlier this week over suspicions of a paper leak. The decision came a day after the test, with the Education Ministry expressing concerns over the integrity of the examination being “compromised.”
