Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Tanvi Patri clinched the Under-15 women’s singles title at the Badminton Asia U-17 and U-15 Junior Championships in Chengdu, China, on Sunday.
The 13-year-old Indian shuttler secured victory by defeating Vietnam’s Thi Thu Huyen Nguyen with scores of 22-20, 21-11 in the final.
Tanvi’s journey to the title was not without challenges. In the first game, she trailed 11-17 at the mid-game interval. However, Nguyen’s unforced errors allowed Tanvi to stage a remarkable comeback, ultimately taking the game after a tight deuce. Riding on this momentum, Tanvi dominated the second game, winning it convincingly at 21-11.
Entering the tournament as the top seed, Tanvi lived up to expectations by not dropping a single game throughout the competition.
This victory brings India its second medal in the championships, with Tankara Gnana Dattu Talasila earlier securing a bronze in the U-17 men’s singles category. Despite winning the first game 21-9 in his semifinal against Indonesia’s Radithya Bayu Wardhana, Dattu lost the subsequent games 13-21, 13-21, missing out on a place in the final.
