6 Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in 1992 Ajmer Rapes Case Involving Over 100 Victims

A POCSO court has sentenced six individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in the infamous Ajmer rapes case of the early 1990s.

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court, presided over by Judge Ranjan Singh, also imposed fines of Rs 5 lakh on each of the convicts.

The six convicts—Nafees Chishti, Naseem alias Tarzan, Salim Chishti, Iqbal Bhati, Sohail Gani, and Sayed Zameer Hussain—were found guilty of sexually exploiting over 100 girls, prosecution counsel Virendra Singh stated. Notably, Iqbal Bhati was transported to Ajmer from Delhi via ambulance to attend the proceedings.

The scandal, which shocked the nation in 1992, involved a gang that lured girls aged 11 to 20, primarily students of a renowned private school in Ajmer. The gang took compromising photographs of the girls and later raped them at a farmhouse.

Of the 18 individuals initially charged, the remaining accused have either served their sentences or been acquitted. This separate trial focused on these six individuals.
