Sambalpur Triple Murder Case: Death Sentence Awarded to Prime Accused

Sambalpur: In a significant legal development, a court in Odisha’s Sambalpur district has reached a verdict in a high-profile triple murder case. The incident took place in Lapada village under the Mahulpali area of Sambalpur district back in 2020. The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Kuchinda, Rajkishore Lenka, delivered the judgment, awarding differing sentences to the accused parties.

The primary perpetrator, Navin Dehury, was handed the death penalty for his role in the gruesome murders. Navin’s son, Hemanand, was found guilty of involvement in the crime and was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment. Furthermore, the court levied a fine of Rs one lakh on Hemanand as part of his punishment.

The case revolved around a family dispute concerning land rights, leading to the tragic demise of three individuals. The victims were identified as Giridhari Sahu, his wife Savitri Sahu, and his mother-in-law Pirobati. The court’s decision was based on a comprehensive evaluation of statements from 20 witnesses, scientific data, and circumstantial evidence. The prosecuting government advocate, R K Nayak, underscored the significance of these factors in delivering a fair judgment.

Both Navin and Hemanand were apprehended by the Mahulpali police following the incident. The culmination of the trial underscores the judicial system’s commitment to upholding justice in the face of heinous crimes. This case serves as a reminder of the legal consequences that await those who perpetrate acts of violence and disruption within communities.
