Former Gunupur MLA Ramamurthy Gomango Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Wife’s Murder

Bhubaneswar: Former Gunupur MLA Ramamurthy Gomango has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Sashirekha Gomango. The special court of Additional District Judge (ADJ-III) in Bhubaneswar handed down the verdict, convicting Gomango under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In addition to the life sentence, he was fined Rs 50,000, with a one-year jail term as an alternative. Another fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed under Section 201 of the IPC, carrying a six-month imprisonment option.

The conviction comes after a lengthy legal process. Based on the testimony of 11 witnesses and 15 relevant documents, Gomango was found guilty of brutally killing his pregnant wife in 1995. Sashirekha’s body was discovered with severe burn injuries at their residence in the MLA Colony, Bhubaneswar.

Initially registered as an unnatural death case at the Kharavel Nagar Police Station, the investigation later upgraded it to a murder case under Sections 302 and 201 of the IPC. It took nearly three decades for the court to reach a verdict and convict the former Gunupur Assembly Constituency legislator.
