ABVP Moves Orissa HC Demanding Students’ Union Elections

Bhubaneswar: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student’s wing of the BJP, on Monday moved the Orissa High Court urging for necessary directions to the Odisha government to conduct students’ union elections in the state.

In the petition filed by the ABVP’s Odisha general secretary,  the Odisha Chief Secretary, the School and Mass Education Department Secretary, the Higher Education Department Secretary and others are the parties.

In the academic calendar issued by the state Higher Education department for the session 2023-24, there is no mention of students’ union elections.

Since 2018, students’ union elections have not been held in universities and degree colleges in Odisha. Because of Cyclone Titli students’ union elections were not held in 2018. They were not conducted in 2019 and 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
