Afghan Embassy Ends Operations in India Citing ‘Lack of Support’

New Delhi: The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in India has announced its decision to close operations effective Sunday, citing a lack of support from the host government and diplomatic challenges.

The embassy said in a statement that it was forced to make the decision after careful consideration, taking into account the historic ties between Afghanistan and India.

The embassy highlighted the absence of crucial support from the Indian government, as well as the lack of diplomatic support in India and the absence of a legitimate functioning government in Kabul.

The embassy also acknowledged the departure of the ambassador and senior diplomats from the Afghan embassy in India, who have sought asylum in Europe and the United States.

The embassy assured that emergency consular services for Afghan citizens will remain operational until the transfer of the embassy’s custodial authority to the host country.

The embassy refuted any baseless claims of internal strife or discord among its diplomatic staff.

India had previously closed down its embassy in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover in 2021. However, Ambassador Farid Mamundzay and mission staff appointed by ousted Afghan President Ashraf Ghani were allowed to issue visas and handle trade matters in India.
