Ben Stokes Pulls Out of IPL 2024 to ‘Manage Workload & Fitness’, CSK Contemplate Retention

Chennai Super Kings’ dynamic English allrounder, Ben Stokes, has opted out of IPL 2024 to prioritize workload management and fitness. The franchise, expressing support for his decision, has not confirmed whether they will release him before the retention deadline on November 26. If retained, the Super Kings can keep him for IPL 2025.

Stokes, who recently came out of ODI retirement for the 2023 ODI World Cup, showcased good batting form despite England’s struggles. Post the tournament, he revealed plans for knee surgery, addressing a long-standing issue that flared up during the New Zealand tour. The timeline for his return will be determined based on rehabilitation.

Despite being the most expensive buy for Super Kings in the 2023 IPL auction, Stokes had a limited impact due to the knee injury, playing only two games as a specialist batter. His absence from bowling was a cautious approach by the team, waiting for him to be “100% ready,” as stated by coach Stephen Fleming.

Stokes’ World Cup performance was notable, scoring 304 runs in six innings, making him England’s second-highest run-scorer. Although he didn’t bowl, his contributions included two half-centuries and a century, with an average of 50.66 and a strike rate of 89.14.

Looking ahead, Stokes, also the England Test captain, aims to be fit for the five-Test series in India from January 25 to March 11. He expressed dedication to a speedy recovery, emphasizing readiness for the challenging series.
