Bird Flu in Odisha: Central Team Reviews Situation in Affected Areas

Puri: A three-member Central team visited several poultry farms in the Nimapara block of Puri district today as concerns about bird flu continue to grow in Odisha. The team’s primary objective was to assess the ground situation and gather information about the outbreak’s impact.

The Central team, comprising veterinary experts Abhijit Mitra, Adhiraj Mishra and Ramasish Hazare, engaged with locals and the Rapid Response teams in the affected areas. Their interactions focused on understanding the symptoms of bird flu and any recent deaths of poultry. The team visited several villages, including Daspurusottampur, Balipada and Bakugaon, within the Nimapara block.

A confirmed case of bird flu has been identified in a poultry farm located in Kothakusanga village. The virus has been detected in chickens, raising concerns about its potential spread to other birds and even humans. While no human cases have been reported to date, the Central team stressed the importance of taking precautions and isolating affected poultry.

Dr Mitra highlighted that bird flu can affect chickens, wild birds and cows. He cautioned that the risk of human transmission cannot be entirely dismissed.

The team urged poultry farmers to adhere to strict biosecurity measures, including isolating sick birds and preventing contact with healthy flocks. Senior veterinary officials and other local authorities accompanied the Central team during the visit.
