Calcutta High Court Orders CBI Probe Into Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered for a CBI probe into the murder and rape of a post-graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata.

A division bench of the Calcutta High Court headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam was hearing a petition filed by the parents of the trainee doctor seeking a court-monitored investigation in the case. Some other petitions were also filed seeking a CBI probe into it.

In its order, the Calcutta High Court pointed out the lapses in probe by the West Bengal police and said even after five days, there has been no major progress in the investigation.

“Under normal circumstances, we would have called for a report. But the case is peculiar. And the facts warrant appropriate orders without loss of time. Without significant progress in the investigation, we would be well justified in accepting the prayers by the victim’s parents that evidence would be destroyed,” the bench said as it transferred the investigation to the CBI.

On August 9, the body of the woman postgraduate trainee was found in a seminar hall in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested on August 10 in connection with the crime.

The court also slammed the Principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Dr Sandip Ghosh for not being “proactive”. Ghosh resigned after facing backlash over the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. He was immediately made principal of another college.
