CAS Defers Verdict on Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Medal Appeal Till August 16

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has once again postponed its verdict on Vinesh Phogat’s appeal regarding her disqualification from the Paris Olympics. This marks the third time the decision has been delayed. The court is now expected to announce its ruling on Friday, 16 August, at 9:30 pm IST.

Phogat had initially challenged her disqualification and sought a joint silver medal in the women’s 50kg wrestling category. In a press release issued on Tuesday, 13 August, CAS confirmed the extension of the decision deadline to 16 August 2024 at 6:00 pm Paris time, citing the need for more time under Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules for the Olympic Games.

According to the rules, the CAS Panel must typically deliver a verdict within 24 hours of a hearing’s conclusion during the Olympics. However, the CAS Ad Hoc Division’s President or Deputy President can extend this timeframe in exceptional cases.

In her appeal, Phogat had requested the CAS to reverse her disqualification and allow her to compete in the final. However, she did not seek urgent interim measures. Despite a fast-tracked initial verdict, CAS could not hear the parties involved before the final, leading to her disqualification.

Phogat’s revised appeal sought the annulment of the disqualification and the awarding of a joint silver medal.
