CBI to Probe Horrifying Manipur Video, Trials Sought Outside State

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will investigate the horrifying video from Manipur, which showed two women being paraded naked by a mob. The Union Home Ministry referred the case to the CBI, leading to nationwide outrage and a political face-off with the united opposition. The government aims to hold the trial outside Manipur, where violence has been ongoing for the past three months.

The video sparked a furore in the parliament, with the opposition demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When the government declined to provide one, the opposition pushed for a no-confidence motion against the government, which was accepted by Speaker Om Birla. While the numbers may be in the government’s favour, the opposition hopes to compel the Prime Minister to speak on Manipur in the House.

The government plans to seek cooperation for the Manipur discussion after the no-confidence motion. They argue that there is no precedent for a statement from the Prime Minister in similar cases of violence in the past. However, the opposition insists that the current situation demands the Prime Minister’s attention due to the high number of casualties, injuries, and displacements resulting from the ethnic violence.

The government’s decision to call for a CBI probe is seen as an attempt to address the public outrage in Manipur, which is a BJP-ruled state. The violence in Manipur has also drawn international attention, with the European Parliament adopting a resolution on the human rights situation in India, specifically referring to the recent clashes in Manipur. The government maintains that Manipur is an internal matter and disapproves of the European Parliament’s involvement.
