Pakistan, Iran Agree to De-escalate Situation After Tense Week of Airstrikes

In a bid to de-escalate tensions following a series of missile and drone strikes, Pakistan and Iran have mutually agreed to restore full diplomatic relations, as per reports in the media.

The conflict began when Iran launched airstrikes in Pakistan’s Balochistan on Tuesday targeting alleged militant bases, prompting Pakistan to retaliate with strikes on supposed militant targets inside Iran. The move to normalize diplomatic ties was endorsed by Pakistan’s caretaker cabinet, led by Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar, who conducted a national security review after the incidents.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Jalil Abbas Jilani, expressed the nation’s reluctance to escalate the situation, emphasizing a commitment to cooperation and mutual trust.

During a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Jilani conveyed Pakistan’s readiness to collaborate on various issues, particularly in the realm of security. Amir-Abdollahian echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of both countries working together to neutralize terrorist camps in Pakistan.

The recent strikes resulted in casualties on both sides, with conflicting reports on the number of fatalities, including children.
