The man who made this attempt to con police and money lenders was identified as Bikrant Mallick (47) of Andara village under Pattamundai police station limits.

He left behind his belongings on the banks of the Brahmani river on Saturday and escaped to make locals believe that he was dragged away by a crocodile.

According to police sources, his plan was to escape from repaying loans he had taken from several individuals as well as to have his family get the 6 lakh compensation from the forest department for death in a crocodile attack.
